Though it wasn’t a featured song on Carole King‘s Tapestry, “Where You Lead” made enough of a splash to become one of her most memorable songs. A large part of its prestige is due to its inclusion on the hit television series Gilmore Girls. But, even without that needle drop, it was gripping enough for King fans to sit up and take notice of it. Uncover the meaning–which has changed over the years–of “Where You Lead,” below.

Behind the Changing Meaning of “Where You Lead” by Carole King
When King and Toni Stern first wrote this song, the narrative followed a woman trailing after a man wherever he opted to go. And I would go / To the ends of the earth / ‘Cause, darling / To me that’s what you’re worth, she sings in the opening line. Like many songs on Tapestry, this song is concerned with affairs of the heart.
Wanting you the way I do
I only wanna be with you
And I would go
To the ends of the earth
‘Cause, darling
To me that’s what you’re worth
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
Later, the song began to take on a different meaning. King herself felt the song was at odds with changing sentiments around feminism. Not all women in a post ’70s world were keen on the idea of traipsing after a man. Because of that, King cut the song from her setlists. She didn’t give this song its flowers until the early ’00s, when the lyrics got revamped.
If you’re out on the road
Feeling lonely, and so cold
All you have to do is call my name
And I’ll be there on the next train
King reworked the lyrics for Gilmore Girls. Instead of the titular relationship being between a man and a woman, it was molded to fit that of a mother and daughter–much like the plot line of the beloved dramedy.
To further drive home that change, King re-recorded the song with her daughter, Louise Goffin. The song, performed as a duet, became all the more sentimental.

Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow, oh
