Billy Joel will be featured on the debut episode of a new radio interview series hosted by John Mayer called Howโs Life that will premiere at 8 p.m. ET on Thanksgiving, November 28, on SiriusXMโs Life with John Mayer channel. On the show, Mayer chats with Joel about a variety of topics, including the Piano Manโs inspirations, touring, songwriting, his insecurities about his own musical talents, and much more.
Joel also debuts a previously unheard piece of music that he wrote โyears and yearsโ ago.

SiriusXM has shared a few preview clips from the interview. In one segment, Joel admits that he never liked his own singing voice.
โI always wanted to sing like somebody else,โ he told Mayer. โI would go in the studio, and Iโd do a recording. Iโd come back into the control room and listen and go, โOh God, itโs that guy,โ and I was always disappointed. No matter how good I thought the writing was, I never liked my own voice.โ
Billy also revealed the names of various other singers he respects who heโll sometimes will try to emulate while performing.
โRay Charles, Sting, people with โฆ these wonderful voices,โ Joel explained. โEven Elvis Costello sometimes. Iโm trying to channel him. Itโs all over the place.โ
Billy Joel on His Aversion to Writing New Songs
Although he did release a new song in 2023, โTurn the Lights Back On,โ Joel has for years that he no longer gets enjoyment from writing new tunes. Billy explained to Mayer that one reason heโs finds it difficult to come up with new songs is that heโs overly critical of his own work and that of others.
โThe writer thing is a curse that you take with you throughout life,โ he maintained. โAnd when I listen to material, or listen to other peopleโs songs, the writer is always at work. โWell, I wouldโve done it this way,โ or โWhy did he go to that chord?โ and constantly trying to improve on what you did.โ
Joel continued, โWhen youโre writing early on, youโre not editing as much as you do later on. The more you write, the better you get, but then you get to a point where youโve gotten good enough so that nothing is good enough.โ
Joel also revealed that whenever heโs written songs, heโs always composed the music first, with one exception.
โI never write down lyrics until Iโm actually songwriting,โ he explained. โI start from the music first, always, except [for] โWe Didnโt Start the Fire.โ I wrote the words first [for that].โ
