Carrie Underwood Predicted This Singer Would Win ‘American Idol’ During Auditions—Now They’re in the Finale

With the season 23 finale of American Idol kicking off on Sunday, May 18th, fans are prepared to watch as John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Jamal Roberts take the stage one last time. Battling through each round of American Idol, the contestants could only wait to see who not only won over Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan but also the fans. With only one singer able to become the next American Idol, both Underwood and host Ryan Seacrest offered their takes on the final three and who they believed could win.

For Underwood, she brought a great deal of knowledge to the American Idol stage. Having won the competition during the fourth season back in 2005, she knew exactly how the Top 3 felt. Being so close to winning American Idol, the tension and stress seemed to reach an all-time high. But throughout the season, Foster continuously won over Underwood, who once fought for him to stay on the show. “I love that you’re standing here right now, proving me right. And I’m going to tell you right now, if you ain’t real careful, you might just win this whole thing.”

Having watched the contestants overcome each phase of American Idol, Underwood still praised Foster. Even from the start, the singer saw something special. “I was thinking he has a really good chance of winning and I was right because now, he’s in the Top 3.”

Carrie Underwood Explains How ‘American Idol’ Was “Star Boot Camp”

Offering a different perspective, Seacrest had the pleasure of revealing the winner of each season. A pillar in the history of American Idol, he insisted, “I’ve done this 20-something times. but I will tell you that every time we get to that last moment, I look down and when I actually see the winner, I feel the emotion before I say [the name]. And that will happen again on Sunday.”

As for his thoughts on the remaining contestants, Seacrest didn’t want to shine a light on any specific singer. “I think they’re all my favorites.” He added, “I stand next to them. I truly love them all.”

While one singer will watch their career in the music industry start on Sunday night, Underwood admitted that American Idol was just a taste of what was to come. “This is kind of a taste of what the rest of their careers are going to be like. We call [American Idol] ‘Star Boot Camp’ because you learn a lot really fast. You learn how to sing live on TV, how to work with the cameras, how to appeal to the audience, how to deal with criticism, how to do press. You learn all this in a short amount of time, so you just do your best.”

Be sure to tune in for the season finale of American Idol, airing Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
