Ed Sheeran got to combine his two loves – music and soccer – in an original song for the Ted Lasso finale: “A Beautiful Game.”

Like the hit Apple TV series, “A Beautiful Game” has a triumphant feel to it. Produced by Max Martin & OZGO, the lyrics point to a potential end – or at least a hiatus – for the show. The plot of the series follows an American coach (Jason Sudekis) of a British football team.

Though we’ve not reached the end / We should take some time apart / Leave here with no regrets / Knowing we gave our all / Oh I cannot pretend / That this won’t break our hearts / But we will meet again, he sings.

Prior to releasing the song, Sheeran teased his involvement with the series in an Instagram video.

“I recorded bits of it whilst on tour using crowds from the stadiums that I’ve been playing, and I’m super, super, super proud of it,” Sheeran said. “I love the show. I’ve loved working on this song. I hope you enjoy it. [It’s] just a bit of fun. Football!”

The release of “A Beautiful Game” comes on the heels of Sheeran avoiding a lawsuit for his song “Thinking Out Loud.” The English singer/songwriter was sued for allegedly using the same chord structure as Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”

“It’s a chord sequence that you hear on successful songs, but if you say that a song in 1973 owns this, then what about all the songs that came before,” Sheeran said following the verdict in his favor. “We found songs from the 1700s that had similar melodic stuff. No one’s saying that songs shouldn’t be copyrighted, but you just can’t copyright a chord sequence—you just can’t.

“I really think I would’ve [quit music] because it just takes the joy out of it to sit down and say you can’t use a G chord to a C chord because someone did it in the ‘60s,” he continued.

Sheeran also recently released another full-length project in his mathematical series, Subtract. Sheeran has called the album “a bit dark” in comparison to his previous releases.
