While Michael Bublé, Niall Horan, Snoop Dogg, and Reba McEntire looked to return for season 28 of The Voice, airing this fall, the producers already prepared for season 29. And wanting to take the show in a different direction for the 29th season, the producers decided to bring back past coaches who won their season to compete in a set of new challenges. Titled The Voice: Battle of Champions, the season will consist of John Legend, Adam Levine, and none other than the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson.

For those who might not remember, Clarkson last coached on The Voice during season 23. Although leaving the show, she remained busy with her own talk show. She even released her latest album, Chemistry, throughout that time. With several seasons passing since Clarkson sat in the famous red chair, her return marked a special moment for The Voice. But even with her past knowledge of the show, the producers made sure the season brought a new set of challenges.
The New Challenges Kelly Clarkson Will Face On ‘The Voice: Battle Of Champions’
One major change came during the Blind Auditions. Although looking to snag the singer with the most talent, Clarkson, Levine, and Legend will compete to see who can receive the most three-chair turns. For the singer who is able to edge out the competition, they will be rewarded with the Super Steal. This advantage allowed them to protect one of their singers from the other coaches during the Battle Rounds.
Already promising some stiff competition between the three coaches, each singer also received the chance to bring back a former contestant to compete during the Knockouts. Airing for several years, The Voice produced more than a few memorable performances. And for some former contestants, they have the chance to find their way back into the competition when battling against the current lineup of singers.
Lastly, to shake up The Voice even more, producers will allow in-studio voting from former contestants and even fans. Giving fans the power to vote in real-time, the voting will take place throughout the semifinals and finale.
Completely changing how The Voice operated, NBC shared their excitement, writing, “The landmark season will be infused with fast-paced, competitive elements. Delivering a fresh twist on the format that raises the stakes for coaches and artists alike.”
