It’s a great time to be a ’90s kid. It seems like everything we loved back then is here again. This includes the music that dominated the radio and MTV at the time. For instance, *NSYNC recently had a very public reunion at the MTV VMAs and released a new track. Now, we’re getting a documentary that promises a behind-the-scenes look at the height of the boy-band era.

The Wrap reports that a new boy band documentary is coming to Paramount+. At the moment, no one knows when the currently untitled doc will hit the streaming platform. However, we do know that it will focus on some of the biggest boy bands of the late ’90s and early 2000s. Groups like *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and New Kids on the Block will be at the center of the film’s focus.

The documentary will feature new interviews and material alongside unaired interviews from the peak of the boy-band era. Additionally, the film will showcase archival concert footage and candid clips of the groups, their fans and family members, songwriters, producers, and managers.
Johnny Wright and Gunpowder & Sky CEO Van Toffler will co-produce the project. Wright was the manager behind *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and more. At the same time, Toffler produced projects such as TRL, the MTV VMAs, Words & Music, and Tupac: Resurrection, to name a few. Tamra Davis, the director behind nostalgic movies like Rock-CB4, Half Baked, and Billy Madison will helm the new documentary.
Wright spoke about the boy band era in a statement. “The ’90s boy band era was an extraordinary chapter in music where harmonies and beats came together, along with talented vocal artists who captivated the hearts of millions worldwide,” Wright said. “Their music spoke to the dreams, aspirations, and emotions of the fans, creating a bond that transcended borders and language. To this day, the boy bands continue to inspire, uplift, and unite.”
Additionally, Toffler spoke about the longevity of boy bands in the statement. “If you think back to groups like the Jackson 5, who paved the way for boy bands, this music has dominated the charts for decades,” he added. “The reality is, these are insanely talented guys who led the requests each week when I was running TRL,” Toffler said. Then, he noted that groups like One Direction and BTS carry the torch for boy bands today. When you think about it, the boy band era never ended. It just changed.
