Aerosmith fans have been lamenting the band’s decision to retire from touring following the vocal injuries frontman Steven Tyler suffered in 2023. Initially, none of the band members commented about the group’s plans moving forward, but now, bassist Tom Hamilton has answered a series of questions regarding Aerosmith’s and his own future that the Charlie Kendall’s Metalshop podcast has shared on its YouTube channel.

Host Charlie Kendall noted that Hamilton responded to the questions via email, because, Tom explained, he’s received radiation treatment for larynx cancer that makes it difficult for him to speak clearly.
Regarding whether Aerosmith has any kind of upcoming plans, Hamilton said, “We don’t know what the future holds but it won’t include touring.”
Asked whether the group has considered performing again with a different vocalist, the bassist responded, “There’s been no talk at all about going on the road with another singer. I can’t imagine it.”
Hamilton also discussed whether he or any of his bandmates had any other music projects on the horizon.
“I’m sure all of us have music in our future and it will manifest itself in ways that we haven’t planned yet,” he maintained. “I’ve been playing in a band with some good friends. We have a bunch of really good songs and we hope to be putting them out soon and hopefully doing some gigs.”
Hamilton Discusses Steven Tyler’s Injury
Hamilton also offered up a clarification about Tyler’s injury, which led to Aerosmith’s decision to retire from touring.
“We were playing the third show of our Peace Out tour last September,” he noted, referring to Aerosmith’s concert in Elmont, New York, on September 9, 2023. “During the third song of the set Steven had a fall that resulted in a fracture to his larynx. Somehow he finished the show. Don’t ask me how. It’s a testament to his strength and desire to give the people what they came for. It wasn’t a case of him blowing his throat out by doing something wrong.”
Tom continued, “[Steven] has been healing well and working his a– off to get ready to go back out on the road but it just wasn’t possible.”
More About Aerosmith’s Retirement from Touring
Aerosmith announced its decision to retire from touring in a statement issued on August 2 of this year. The statement explained that Tyler had struggled to recover from his vocal injury, but noted that “a full recovery … is not possible.”
After initially canceling and then rescheduling a series of dates for the group’s Peace Out farewell tour, all shows were officially canceled for good.
Hamilton shared that Aerosmith’s decision to retire was “made by the team which includes the band and our dedicated management.” He pointed out that “everyone who works for the band were informed [of the decision] within a day or two.”
Hamilton Reflected on the Band Members’ Relationship with Each Other
Hamilton also discussed the status of the relationship between the group’s members, while suggesting that Aerosmith may not be completely done as a band.
“I think that emotionally the band became closer than ever in the last few years,” he maintained. “Maybe we could feel it deep inside that the conclusion was approaching. I think that will continue.”
Hamilton added, “So many things have happened for us that we never expected. Whoever could have imagined that we’d have a roller coaster at Disney World! The future is still out there and I imagine we’ll figure out a way to be part of it.”
Hamilton’s Message for Aerosmith Fans
The 76-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer concluded the email Q&A by sharing a message for the band’s fans.
“We are so grateful for all the people in this world who have come to love this band,” he wrote. “I think that was the hardest part about retiring from the road, just knowing that there’s so many people out there who have found meaning in our music. We see you and we feel you. Thanks!!”
