Tim Hanseroth and Blake Mills also joined in, playing guitar and snapping to the rhythm. Carlile shared a video of the special jam session on Instagram. She captioned it “Backstage antics at the Hollywood Bowl,” including a rainbow emoji.

Fans went nuts in the comments of the video, sharing love for everyone featured. “This is like seeing the avengers join together for the first time,” one person wrote. Another shared the sentiment, writing, “Literally the avengers but for the girlies and the gays” in all caps.

“My entire Spotify wrapped is here,” another fan commented. Someone else joked, “telling our kids this was the last supper.” Carlile also posted a separate photo of the group surrounding Mitchell. “[Joni Mitchell] with the full backing of the gay mafia…” Carlile wrote in the caption.

Celisse Praises Joni Mitchell for Paving the Way for Her and Other Musicians

During Pilgrimage Festival in Tennessee, musician Celisse spoke with American Songwriter about a lot of different topics, but one she was incredibly passionate about was working with Joni Mitchell. She praised Mitchell for her work over the years and how she paved the way for other female musicians.

“With Joni Mitchell in particular, sitting in the presence of a person like that, who is responsible for some of the most important music we will ever have of our time, I think what really has impacted me in working with her is seeing how she doesn’t have the ability to be anything but herself fully,” said Celisse.

She continued, “The way that she sings, the way that she writes, her perspective on music and art is solely her own,” she continued. “At the beginning, there were plenty of people who didn’t understand it. But she was so committed to her artistry that she sort of pushed past what was happening in popular music at the time and just said ‘this is what I have to say.’”
