In a black sequined dress and heels, Kacey Musgraves took to the stage with her acoustic guitar, backed by a denim-clad band. The crowd who gathered to see her went politely wild after the first chorus, and it’s clear that fans have been loving the new album. Looking positively radiant, Musgraves continued, supported with backing vocals from her guitarist.
“Too Good To Be True” is a sweet, lilting love song with the speaker hoping things will stay grounded somewhat in reality. Things are good in this relationship, but there are worries that it’s too good, that it’s unrealistic for things to be this amazing. If so, it might just disappear, as it can’t possibly be true.
Musgraves sings, Please don’t be too good to be true in the chorus, reiterating the hope that things don’t get out of hand with how good they are. She’s almost looking for a realistic dream relationship—things are so good that they seem unreal, but are still grounded in reality.
Kacey Musgraves’ Austin City Limits performance is part of the 50th anniversary season. Her concert will air on September 28, with the season also including Chris Stapleton, Maggie Rogers and Gracie Abrams, Brittany Howard, and more.
Kacey Musgrave Recently Released Deluxe Version of Deeper Well with Seven New Songs
Earlier this month, Kacey Musgraves released Deeper Into the Well, an expanded edition of her hit album Deeper Well. It includes seven new tracks like “Irish Goodbye,” “Ruthless,” “Little Sister,” “Flower Child,” “Arm’s Length,” and two collaborations with Leon Bridges and Tiny Habits, “Superbloom” and “Perfection” respectively.
The alum itself was already a hit with fans and critics; a deep exploration of Musgraves’ healing process and changes in her life. However, the deluxe edition expands on that, rounding out the album with new tracks that continue the themes of the base album.
For example, “Arm’s Length” is a good mirror for “Too Good To Be True,” as it explores a relationship that just didn’t work out. I couldn’t love you / Into loving me, Musgraves sings, and although the relationship didn’t work, she’s grateful for it. You did me a favor / Even though it hurt / I guess even my savior complex / Couldn’t make it work, she sings. Where “Too Good To Be True” paints a picture of a partnership that is so good it runs the risk of being unbelievable, “Arm’s Length” is about a pair that couldn’t last because the love was basically one-sided.
