David Gilmour has premiered an official music video for the title track of his new solo album, Luck and Strange, featuring previously unseen footage of his late Pink Floyd bandmate Rick Wright.
Videos by American Songwriter
The song “Luck and Strange” was built around a 2007 jam session Gilmour had with the members of his then-current touring band, which at the time featured Wright on keyboards. The jam took place in a barn on Gilmour’s property and was recorded and filmed. Sadly, Wright passed away from cancer in 2008 at age 65.
The video features some of the 2007 footage of the jam session, as well as new scenes of Gilmour singing and playing “Luck and Strange” in the same barn. The clip also includes footage of David and his child Romany recording backing vocals together. There are also scenes of Gilmour and his family members walking on a rocky beach.
Fans React to Gilmour’s New Video Featuring Wright
Many fans who viewed the video have posted emotional reactions to seeing the Pink Floyd bandmates together in the clip in the comments section of Gilmour’s YouTube channel.
One fan wrote, “How beautiful to see David and Richard playing together … unstoppable emotion.”
A second commented, “Rick Wright lives again with this. This is the most beautiful gift David could do to a dear friend. The way he has worked on the existing instrumental making such a heartfelt song shows how much he loves him. Bless you. This is deeply beautiful.”
A third fan wrote, “Past & present together. What a Tribute this is by Sir David Gilmour[.] Gone but not forgotten, Rick [W]right.”
About How “Luck and Strange” Came Together
As Gilmour was putting together material for his new solo album, he decided to revisit the jam session featuring Wright. Rick’s electric piano and Hammond organ parts were incorporated into a new song that became “Luck and Strange.”
Gilmour explained how the song came together in a recent interview with Prog magazine.
“[After] we finished [my 2006] tour … I got together that touring band and said, ‘Come down to the house and we’ll jam for a week in the barn,’” he recalled. “[T]he first jam we did … was the one that became that song—I added a chorus and middle-eight, rebuilt the stuff on top with different chords.”
Gilmour added, “There’s bits where Rick’s playing a Hammond lick and I’ve put guitars on since and I’m playing with him, bouncing off his keyboards and it is a bit weird, but I’m not phased by that element of Rick being there at all at the moment. I just think, ‘Ah, it’s Rick, it’s me, we’re playing.’”
