For many of the biggest classic rock bands of the last half-century, overnight success came after a few years of reaching for the top but not quite getting there. For the following four bands, more or less, they had been making music for a minute before one song absolutely blew them out of the water of obscurity and into the limelight.
โMore Than A Feelingโ by Boston
Boston was quite famously started by one guy named Tom Scholz, who managed to score an audition with a record label without an actual band or a full album recorded. Luckily, he hatched a plan to make it work, and Bostonโs debut self-titled album was released in 1976. โMore Than A Feelingโ was the most memorable hit single from that album, and the attention the song received globally earned Boston superstar status from the very start.

โBohemian Rhapsodyโ by Queen
Queen was already making waves before โBohemian Rhapsodyโ dropped. The band did get together in 1970, several years before the song made them internationally famous. And when this iconic tune came out in 1975, Queen had quickly become a household name. Rock operas were starting to become a thing at that time, but nobody had done it quite like Queen did with โBohemian Rhapsodyโ.
โHotel Californiaโ by Eagles
Eagles were releasing music for a while before โHotel Californiaโ was released. The country rock group first got together in 1971, and โHotel Californiaโ came about six years later in 1977. The storytelling, instrumentation, and memorable energy of the song made people around the world pay attention to Eagles. They only lasted a few more years before inevitably breaking up. But no song in their discography got international attention quite like โHotel Californiaโ.
โStairway To Heavenโ by Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin wasnโt exactly a no-name band before โStairway To Heavenโ was released in 1971. However, they definitely deserve a spot on our list of classic rock bands who blew up after one specific song. The hard rock group formed just a few years earlier in 1968. And while they werenโt known for putting out singles, fans resonated with โStairway To Heavenโ from Led Zeppelin IV in a major way. Theyโve been considered legends ever since.
