4 Classic Rock Songs That Were Inspired by Real-Life People

So many things can inspire a musician, but actual living, breathing people seem to inspire songs the most. The following classic rock songs were written about real-life people. And unless youโ€™re a diehard fan of these bands and musicians, you might not know the real stories behind these songs. Letโ€™s take a look, shall we?

โ€œTalk Tonightโ€ by Oasis

Thereโ€™s quite a bit of lore behind this Oasis song. โ€œTalk Tonightโ€ was written by Noel Gallagher about a woman named Melissa Lim. Following Oasisโ€™ really rough show at Whisky A Go Go, Noel ran off to San Francisco to recuperate, reconnect with a former acquaintance, and think about whether he should quit Oasis for good. Lim convinced him to leave her and keep pursuing a future with the band. He penned โ€œTalk Tonightโ€ as an ode and a thank-you to her. Honestly, she might be the reason why Oasis lasted as long as they did.

โ€œTearjerkerโ€ by Red Hot Chili Peppers

This Red Hot Chili Peppers tune was written about the late great Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. โ€œTearjerkerโ€ came about after RHCP themselves had lost their guitarist figuratively, as he left the band to pursue a solo career. This song is really heartbreaking once you know the context.

โ€œTo Live Is To Dieโ€ by Metallica

This sad song was written about Cliff Burton, one of Metallicaโ€™s most famous bassists. He was with the band for four years until he was tragically killed in a tour bus accident in 1986. He was only 24 years old. Metallica carried on with a new bassist, but the loss of their friend was still weighing on them when the time came to cut a new record. โ€œTo Live Is To Dieโ€ was not only written for Burton, but also features lyrics and a bassline medley written by him before his death.

โ€œTangled Up In Blueโ€ by Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan has always been famously mysterious about what his songs are really about. However, โ€œTangled Up In Blueโ€ is very obviously about his ex-wife, Sara. The whole of Blood On The Tracks is more or less about their breakup, but โ€œTangled Up In Blueโ€ is probably the most direct reference to their relationship and eventual falling-out. Though, plenty of fans believe that this entry on our list of songs about real-life people might include a mix of truth and myth.
