Formed during the 1960s, the Rolling Stones became one of the biggest rock bands to come from the rock era of music. And besides selling over 250 million albums, the band continues to perform. Recently, guitarist Keith Richards celebrated turning 81 years old on December 18th. With a career spanning decades, Richards received a special treat when Susanna Hoffs decided to join forces with Elvis Costello to cover The Stones’ hit song “Connection.”

Taking a trip back to 1967, the Rolling Stones released their fifth studio album with Between the Buttons. While featuring several songs, many fans gravitated towards “Connection.” Written by Mick Jagger and Richards, the song was not only covered by several stars but it also landed on the 2008 film Shine a Light. With it being Richards’ birthday, Hoffs and Costello offered a heartfelt gift with the cover.
Besides covering the song, Hoffs also took a moment to praise Richards and his energy on stage. “His smile, his swagger, his songwriting — the way he moves on stage, as if his guitar is a part of his body and together they meld with the music and the emotion of the song. He’s sung lead on three of my most favorite Rolling Stones songs: ‘Happy,’ ‘You Got the Silver,’ and ‘Connection.’”
Susanna Hoffs And Elvis Costello Praise Each Other On Collaboration
As for her work with Costello, Hoffs considered it a dream to collaborate with the icon. “I had the great honor of singing with Elvis at a couple of his shows, and it was a dream to record a song together.”
Costello wasn’t the only one to receive praise and he threw it right back at Hoffs. “What a gas to sing with Sue again. I’d be the ‘Keith’ to her ‘Mick’ any day.”
With Hoffs and Costello having a great time working together, it seemed to show as the cover of “Connection” gained high praise from fans. One comment insisted, “Love this! What a joy to hear. I really like the balance of your voices together. There are so many talented artists in the world. What I truly like about this is that you and Elvis Costello are two voices I’ve grown to love hearing over my life. You both have such a joy for song that comes through whenever you sing. It’s that joy makes the connection with the listener. Cheers!”
