50 Years Of SNL Music was directed by Questlove. The film is slated for release on January 27 to celebrate the iconic television program’s 50th anniversary. According to the trailer, the film will be packed with important interviews from performers and cast members alike. It will also feature BTS footage and in-depth explorations of some of the most legendary (and infamous) SNL musical performances of all time.

We’re glad to hear the doc was directed by Questlove, considering his talent for music documentaries. His documentary film Summer Of Soul won an Oscar back in 2022. Viewers can expect that same kind of quality from 50 Years Of SNL Music.

The trailer also seems to hint that the film will analyze and dive deep into the more controversial musical moments that happened on the live TV program. Sinéad O’Connor’s direct act of protest will obviously be a big feature, as will Ashley Simpson’s famous lip-syncing debacle. Controversial divergences from agreed-upon performances by the likes of Rage Against The Machine, Kanye West, and Elvis Costello will likely also be touched on. Hopefully, they’ll dive into the hilariously controversial Fear and Cypress Hill performances, too.

‘50 Years Of SNL Music’ Provides An Honest Look Into The Structure of the Show’s Musical Segments

In addition to all of that BTS footage, fans can expect to see interviews and commentary from some of the biggest names in music that have hit the SNL stage. Dave Grohl, Miley Cyrus, Mick Jagger, and Jack White are just a few names. Some of those famed musical guests have even commented on how difficult it is to be a musical guest on the famed late-night program.

“You have to run from the music sketch, and you’re covered in sweat, and change,” said Mick Jagger in the trailer for 50 Years Of SNL Music.

“They can go one way if all goes well, or the complete opposite if it doesn’t,” said cast member Bowen Yang of Kanye West’s controversial appearance in which he wore a MAGA hat.

Fans can watch 50 Years Of SNL Music via NBC on January 27. After the film’s debut, you can watch it on Peacock on January 28.
