Cross Canadian Ragweed Kicks off Long-Awaited Reunion—With Some Help From Taylor Swift

It’s been more than a decade since Cross Canadian Ragweed abruptly called it quits seemingly at the peak of their success. Last year, the Oklahoma red dirt icons stunned longtime fans when they announced a string of reunion shows in Stillwater. Yesterday (Thursday, April 10) the moment finally arrived. And what song did the Boys From Oklahoma choose for their opening night walkout? Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town?” Eminem’s “Without Me?” Nope—instead, the country-rockers tapped pop superstar Taylor Swift for their dramatic entrance.

Nearly 15 years after the members of Cross Canadian Ragweed went their separate ways, a sold-out crowd packed Oklahoma State University’s Boone Pickens Stadium to witness their reunion. After a spirited introduction from OSU football coach Mike Gundy, Cody Canada, Grady Cross, Randy Ragsdale, and Jeremy Plato took the stage to Taylor Swift’s 2012 bop “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Laughter bubbled up from the crowd as Swift’s voice filtered through the speakers: I remember when we broke up the first time / Saying, “This is it, I’ve had enough…” / Then you come around again and say, “Baby, I miss you and I swear I’m gonna change, trust me.” / Remember how that lasted for a day?

The song choice was a lighthearted dig at frontman Cody Canada’s previous insistence that the band was never, ever getting back together. (Like, ever.) “Sixteen years is a good run… getting back together will never happen,” Canada said in 2020.

Time Heals All Wounds

Humor aside, Cross Canadian Ragweed’s entrance also signified a turning of the page for the “Sick and Tired” hitmakers. In February, Cody Canada indicated to American Songwriter that he was ready to put the past in the rearview.

“I went 15 years not playing with that band and, honestly, 12 years of being in my feelings about it and being mad about the breakup and really not trying to do anything about it because I thought the ship had sailed,” he said. “So, I went from being not happy about a lot of sh*t to being happy.”

Canada continued, “It feels great to forgive and forget and grow up and to play those songs again.”
