Growing up with Loretta Lynn as her grandmother, Emmy Russell was always surrounded by a rich history of country music. And for Lynn, she knew the power Russell possessed within her voice. But even with Russell wanting a different career, she eventually found herself competing during season 22 of American Idol. Making her way through each round, she was sadly voted out before making it into the Top 3. Not letting the loss define her, Russell not only welcomed her first child but decided to pay tribute to her late grandmother with โPhone Call To Heaven.โ
Throughout her time on American Idol, Russell showcased not just her voice but her songwriting abilities. She offered fans a performance of her original song โSkinny.โ And for those country fans, she even covered Lynnโs famous song โCoal Minerโs Daughter.’ But now, wanting nothing more than to share one more conversation with her grandmother, Russell used those feelings for โPhone Call To Heaven.โ

Sharing a video on Instagram, Russell broke down as she used her phone to make a call to heaven. She said, โHey Memaw, I really wish that you could meet my daughter. I think you would love her.โ Barely able to control her emotions during the call, the singer urged fans to call the number listed to leave their own messages to loved ones in heaven. โMiss someone? Call 615-249-8476 and leave a short voicemail. Weโre collecting voicemails for a special video for our song “Phone Call to Heaven” that comes out THIS FRIDAY.โย
Emmy Russell Happy Loretta Lynn Was No Longer Hurting
With โPhone Call To Heavenโ releasing this Friday, her husband, Tyler Ward, also struggled to contain himself when trying to make a call to his dad. Barely able to get the words โHey Dadโ out, Ward instantly broke down.ย
Although a tough subject to discuss, Russell found peace in knowing that her grandmother was no longer hurting. โI’m so happy that you’re in a place where you don’t feel alone and you’re just no longer sick anymore. I love you so much. I miss you so much.”
An emotional experience for Russell and her family, the rising star recently shared another video of her daughter, Taylor Raydiant Ward. In the video, the baby simply looked at the camera, not knowing the history of country music that ran through her veins. But with Russell always remembering her grandmother, she will make sure Lynnโs legacy continues on for generations.
