In a follow-up statement after the fact, the giant in modern music explained that he did so because he thought the fan was showing him a lack of respect.

Bad Bunny, whose LP, Una Verano Sin Ti, was the most popular album of 2022, according to Billboard, making it the first Spanish-language album to do so, said he appreciates fans with genuine interest in him, but if you shove a phone in his face, he’s going to react, well, badly.

In the video, which you can see below, Bad Bunny is walking with friends and colleagues in the Dominican Republic when a female fan comes up beside him, screaming and holding her phone out for a video or a selfie. That’s when Bad Bunny grins and then, without word, grabs the phone and chucks it left into the ocean. The fan is shocked, as you can see in the video.

On Twitter, Bad Bunny shared his explanation for his action, saying, in Spanish, that he always loves to give “attention and respect” to fans who come at him with genuine appreciation. But the fans who shove phones into his face show a “lack of respect.” So, he did something about it.

Here is the English translation of his tweet, which you can also see below in full in Spanish: “The person who comes up to me to say hello, to tell me something, or just to meet me, will always receive my attention and respect. Those who come to put a phone bastard in my face I will consider it for what it is, a lack of respect and I will treat it likewise.”

Ironically, Bad Bunny’s biggest song at the moment, “Tití Me Preguntó,” is about partying and taking selfies. Maybe he should make it clear that art is not to imitate life.
