Gene “Groove” Allen, Groove B. Chill Rapper, Dead at 62

Gene “Groove” Allen has died. Best known for his role in rap trio Groove B. Chill, Allen died Feb. 12 at his Maryland home, TMZ reported. He was 62.

One of Allen’s family members told the outlet that the rapper died suddenly after a medical emergency. While Allen’s death was reportedly a shock to his loved ones, the outlet reported that no foul play is suspected.

Allen is survived by his wife and three children, per the outlet.

Gene “Groove” Allen Is Remembered

Allen’s daughter, Nikki Wilkinson, paid tribute to her dad on Facebook.

“Gene Groove Allen may be a celebrity to yall but to us he was the man who made sure we stayed smiling through this rollercoaster we call life,” she wrote. “He is loved, he is needed and yes it was a total shock. I know he is watching over me & my siblings.”

Allen got his start in The Uptown Crew in the ’80s, but hit it big when he, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, and Belal “DJ Belal” Miller formed Groove. B Chill.

The trio appeared in the 1990 flick House Party. Allen and Mitchell returned for the film’s sequel the following year.

Allen’s acting career continued with parts in Boomerang and What’s Love Got To Do With It.

Per his website, in recent years Allen “shifted his focus toward community service and empowerment.” According to Billboard, Allen has worked to raise money for military veterans and women’s shelters by hosting events.

“He is passionate about making a positive difference in the neighborhoods he engages with and works tirelessly to uplift others,” the site read. “Collaborating with an eclectic mix of artists, organizers, and community members, he strives to bring diverse entertainment experiences to a broader audience.”

Gene “Groove” Allen’s Return to Music

As of late, Allen had been teasing a return to music. On social media, he had been promoting a forthcoming EP,  Bring Back the Party.

Just two days before his death, Allen posted a video of himself performing on Instagram.

“2025!!! I aint playing…,” he captioned the post.
