Green Day Cancels Final Australia Show “Due to Circumstances Out of Our Control”

Green Day’s Australia tour is coming to an early end. In a post to their Instagram Story, the band announced that their Wednesday, March 5 show in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, has been canceled “due to circumstances out of our control.”

The circumstance to which the post referred is that of Cyclone Alfred. Per Australian outlet 9 News, the cyclone is expected to make landfall on Thursday night or Friday morning. However, damaging wind gusts are likely to begin the day before, when Green Day’s concert was scheduled to take place.

“With Cyclone Alfred bringing some seriously nasty weather, it’s just not possible to go ahead safely,” the band wrote on their Instagram Story. “We know this is a huge disappointment, and we’re just as bummed as you are. Stay safe out there!”

Prior to the canceled show, Green Day played concerts in Melbourne and Sydney. The Gold Coast show was their last scheduled concert on the continent.

Green Day’s 2025 Plans

Despite the cancellation, fans will still have plenty of opportunities to see Green Day this year.

The band, who released their most recent album, Saviors, last year, is set to play a sold out in gig in India, before heading to Mexico for another show. Afterwards, Green Day will play Coachella, as well as several other music festivals. Then, over the summer, Green Day will play shows across Europe.

Earlier this year, the band made headlines for changing one of their lyrics to mock Elon Musk. One day before the Tesla founder attended Donald Trump’s inauguration, Green Day performed a show in Musk’s native South Africa.

When frontman Billie Joe Armstrong got to the part of “American Idiot” where he’s supposed to sing “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda,” he changed the lyric to, “I’m not a part of the Elon agenda.”

It’s not the first time Green Day has made a similar adjustment. In a 2023 performance, Armstrong changed the same “American Idiot” lyric, this time to, “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”

Musk fired back on X, writing, “Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it.”

Later, Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt spoke out about Musk’s tweet.

“Elon Musk actually is the machine. I can’t take anything else from that. He’s not shy about saying stupid shit on the internet,” he told Rolling Stone. “Whatever. The song’s twenty years old, and we’re Green Day. What did you expect?”
