Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson Recall How Their First-Ever Live Performance Caused an Upheaval at Their Family’s Church

On Monday, September 16, The Kelly Clarkson Show debuted a previously unaired segment recorded during an appearance by Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson earlier this year. The sibling rockers were promoting their group’s then-just-launched 2024 Royal Flush Tour.

Host Kelly Clarkson noted that Heart had been together for 50 years, and she asked Ann and Nancy if they remembered their very first performance together. This prompted the sisters to share a very interesting recollection.

Nancy told Kelly that she and Ann first performed together at their parent’s church, the First Congregational Church in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, Washington, during a “Youth Sunday” gathering.

She then explained, “There was a youth group, and there were, like, camps. We did camps and stuff at the church with the church group. But we thought it would be cool and funny to … represent the youth of the day and be doing, like, cool folk music.” Nancy then revealed that the so-called “cool folk” artist whose music they decided to perform at church on a Sunday was edgy rockers The Doors.

Ann Wilson then shared, “We thought The Doors were folk music, so we went up and sang ‘When the Music’s Over.’”

Nancy pointed out that the song includes the lyric “Cancel my subscription to the resurrection,” and Ann added, sarcastically, “Real nice choice.”

Clarkson asked the sisters how their performance was received, and Ann revealed, “The outcome was that half the congregation got up and walked out. The other half stayed, right? And the church was never the same again. … It became a much more progressive church after that.”

About Ann Wilson’s Recent Health Issues and Heart’s Rescheduled Tour

In May 2024, Heart announced they were canceling a series of European concerts scheduled in June and July because Ann had to undergo a “routine medical procedure,” for which she needed six weeks to recover.

Then, Ann revealed on July 2 that she’d been diagnosed with cancer and would be undergoing preventive chemotherapy treatment. She also reported that her doctors instructed her to take the rest of the year off to recover, resulting in Heart postponing its remaining 2024 tour dates.

On September 9, Heart announced dates for a 2025 edition of its Royal Flush Tour. The new trek currently features 19 confirmed North American shows, all of which were rescheduled from this year. The tour kicks off on February 28 in Las Vegas and is plotted out through an April 5 show in Quebec City, Canada.
