“I always lean on writing music that has an interesting storyline centered in the country genre, with rock and pop elements to appeal to fans of melodic songs,” Meyer tells American Songwriter. “This tune is no exception.”

Meyer wrote the soaring love ballad with Connor Christian in Nashville. “Wait to Wake Up” is produced by drummer Elton Charles and Lasse L. Jacobs.

I can’t wait to wake, wake up
When you’re lying next to me
I can’t wait to wake, wake up

Feel your body pressed against me
I’m tired of dreaming about you
Want to put my arms around you

I can’t wait to wake, wake up

“Wait to Wake Up” follows Meyer’s December 2020 album, All the Right Lanes, vol 1, a collaboration between Swedish producer Håkan Mjörnheim and his Nashville team. With a 20-year catalog under his belt, Meyer credits Lady A for encouraging him to make his first visit to Music City after he opened for the trio in 2012.

“My Nashville story started in 2012, when I laid eyes on a Lady A tour poster stamped on a street pole in Gothenburg, Sweden,” he recalls. “The trio was coming to town, and in the most old-fashioned way, I mailed one of my CDs to the Swedish promoter who had booked them. Half a year later, me and my band did our first opening show for Lady A in Gothenburg.”

He’d later follow a similar route to his first show at Nashville’s famed The Bluebird Cafe.

“While driving around and exploring the city one day, I couldn’t help but notice how big the line was to such a small place right in the heart of Green Hills,” he says. “I looked closer and of course, I’m talking about the world-famous Bluebird Cafe. I figured I only had a couple of weeks before I had to go back to Sweden, so once again I mailed my then-latest album Good Night to Be Young in the hopes of getting a response.

“I could not have dreamed of what I later received in my mail inbox: an invitation to play a full hour on a Sunday spotlight at the Bluebird.”

While Meyer admits that some of the stories throughout his career make it look like a smooth ride, it took many trips and sacrifices to break into the Nashville music scene. He credits encouragement from his mentor Jimmy Mattingly, a fiddle player for Garth Brooks, and entertainment lawyer Karl Braun for making important industry connections and building his team.

“To this day, I continue to travel between Nashville and Sweden working closely with Håkan Mjörnheim, Karl Braun, Jimmy Mattingly and manager Lisa Sprague with a mission to inspire others and make the best memories possible,” Meyer adds.
