Metal Band Member Abruptly Quits Mere Weeks Ahead of New Album Drop

As I Lay Dying bassist, Ryan Neff, dropped some shell-shocking news less than one month before their upcoming album release. Neff, who has been a member of the group since 2022, announced his departure before the release of their album, Through Storms Ahead. Which is set to release on November 15.

The 36-year-old bassist became a critical part of the band’s 2022 revamping in addition to drummer Nick Pierce and guitarist Ken Susi. Neff, who is also a member of Miss May I, took to Instagram to announce the staggering news.

Ryan Neff’s Official Statement

Neff wrote in his post, “As of today, I have made the decision to leave As I Lay Dying” and “This choice comes after much reflection, and I believe it is the right step for my personal and professional journey.” He closed out his comment by writing, “I am grateful for the experiences and connections I’ve made during my time with the band. Thank you to all the fans for your support.”

Other than Neff’s comments, it’s unclear as to why exactly he decided to leave on such short notice. However, Neff still follows every member of the band except lead singer, Tim Lambesis. Lambesis, one of the band’s last original members, recently commented on the band’s attempted reunion and their rapid turnover rate. He said on The Jasta Show Podcast, “I think what they did was a very sincere effort” and “After a year or 18 months or whatever it was of just trying to push this thing to happen.” The band attempted to reunite after Lambesis was released from prison in 2016. Which he was sent to after he tried hiring a hitman to kill his wife.

Ryan Neff’s departure from the band isn’t a new or unusual occurrence. In 2020, Nick Hipa left the group and in 2022, was followed by Josh Gilbert and Jordan Mancino. Neither the band nor any of its current members have publicly acknowledged Neff’s departure or commented on any line-up replacements. As I Lay Dying plans to embark on their European tour on November 16, the day after their album drops.
