Miranda Lambert Shares the Career-Altering Advice She Got From Loretta Lynn

Loretta Lynn was a country music pioneer, blazing a trail for women in the industry that still burns brightly today. Songs like “The Pill” and “Fist City” connected with female country fans who may have previously felt underrepresented by the genre. And without Loretta, we may have never gotten Miranda Lambert. The “Wranglers” star recently opened up about the life-changing advice she received from the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” legend.

What Loretta Lynn Told Miranda Lambert

Miranda Lambert’s career has swung a wide arc from independent country artist to nine-time ACM Female Vocalist of the Year. Her 10th studio album, Postcards from Texas—released last week— is full of the same fire and clever wordplay that made her famous two decades ago.

During a recent appearance on The Great Creators Podcast, Lambert reflected on the invaluable advice she received from the “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” singer.

“Loretta Lynn said if you don’t go live your life you’re not going to have anything to write about,” said the 40-year-old country star.

“And so I’ve done it,” she added with a chuckle.

“Always the Real Deal”

Loretta Lynn was an unabashed truth-teller, and country music is better for it. And although the “Blue Kentucky Girl” died in 2022 at age 90, that spirit of raw honesty still endures in Miranda Lambert.

“When I started going on the road and having boyfriends and playing shows all over the country, I started really writing from my own perspective a lot,” Lambert said on the podcast. “But I think that’s the draw of country music, especially if it’s truth.”

“I mean it’s crying in your beer and your dog died and your wife left you and that’s what it is,” she continued. “So I feel like I always wanted to be a truth-teller, a storyteller, but stories that were of the truth, good, bad, and ugly. And some of that you had to live, which wasn’t the fun part.”

The three-time GRAMMY award winner shared a snippet of the interview to her Instagram page on Thursday (Sept. 19.) Fans praised her authenticity in the comments

“Always the real deal is Miranda. She tells it straight away,” one user wrote. “Country music would be missing a lot without her in it.”

Turns out, we have Loretta Lynn to thank.
