Ahead of this year’s halftime show, chatter circulated online that there will be an unexpected moment during Lamar’s highly-anticipated set.
Hits Daily Double posted about the Lamar’s performance noting that there are “rumors of a big surprise” planned. The tweet went viral, and fans were quick to weigh in on what would fit the bill.
One of the biggest theories is that Drake will join Lamar onstage for his performance. That would certainly be a big surprise, given that the pair have been engaged in a beef as of late. “Not Like Us,” the diss track that made Lamar victorious in the feud, recently won the rapper five GRAMMY Awards.
“kendrick’s surprise at the super bowl is gonna be drake comes out, the beef is squashed,” one person tweeted, with another suggesting, “Kendrick should bring out Drake at the super bowl and perform We Cry Together.”
A third person agreed, writing, “In some weird timeline, Kendrick brings out drake tomorrow as the big surprise.”
Another user wasn’t so sure, though, as they recounted, “Someone said that Drake might pop out at the Super Bowl to perform poetic justice with Kendrick and someone commented ‘Yall think this is Marvel.’”
What to Expect from Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show
While fans are anticipating that Lamar will include “Not Like Us” in his set list, the lyrics may sound a little different than usual. That’s because Drake has filed a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group over the song, largely due to its “certified pedophile” lyric.
However, Lamar performed the song without incident at the GRAMMY Awards. According to a Billboard Canada report, Fox and the NFL may choose to ignore the defamation lawsuit because they believe Drake doesn’t have a strong case.
Meanwhile, Lamar has already confirmed that he’ll have at least one special guest during his set. SZA will take the stage with the rapper during his halftime performance.
During the Apple Music Super Bowl press conference, Lamar promised fans that they can expect “storytelling” when he takes the stage.
“I’ve always been very open about storytelling through all my catalogue and my history of music,” he said. “And I’ve always had a passion about bringing that on whatever stage I’m on.”
