To paraphrase Ben Franklin’s thoughts on beer, I think music is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. So there’s no shame in any of it. I enjoy what I enjoy, and leave the shame for things that are actually shameful. (Like littering, or watching Bones.)

In the grand scheme of things, even the most sophisticated pop music shares more DNA with Britney Spears’s work than it does with, like,Thelonious Monk or Mahler. If a song expresses some genuine human emotion, then it works for me. And if it doesn’t work for me, it works for someone else, so I try not to be mean.
