The Song Morgan Wallen Recorded “Strictly” for Eric Church on His New Album

Morgan Wallen is turning over a new leaf on his fourth studio album, I’m the Problem, out today (Friday, May 16.) The record comes a year after his highly-publicized arrest at Eric Church’s bar, Chief’s on Broadway. With those legal woes now behind him, the “Cowgirls” crooner, 32, recorded significantly fewer songs about drinking whiskey for I’m the Problem. Ahead of the album’s release, Morgan Wallen spoke about “Number 3 and Number 7,” his latest Eric Church collaboration.

Morgan Wallen Talks Reuniting With “Mentor” Eric Church

I’m the Problem, the newest addition to Morgan Wallen’s musical catalogue, see the reigning Entertainer of the Year teaming up with new faces, like Tate McRae, and familiar ones, like Eric Church and Post Malone.

“Number 3 and Number 7” marks the second Wallen-Church collab, following 2023’s “Man Made a Bar.” The lyrics describe a fictional car crash that resulted from mixing “Number 3” (referring to NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt) and “Number 7” (Jack Daniels.)

Wallen elaborated on the song during the album listening events at his Nashville restaurant, This Bar and Tennessee Kitchen. “I cut that song strictly because I wanted Eric Church on the song,” said the “Just In Case” hitmaker. “So I asked him beforehand if he wanted to get on it, before I recorded it in the studio.”

He continued, “I’ve said many times how much of an impact Eric has had on me as a musician and as an artist, and now he’s become one of my closest friends. Just to have a mentor and a friend like that is super special. I’m still a big fan of of his art, and the way that he evolves as a musician. I think as long as we keep making songs that fit well together, he’s just going to be a staple on the things that I do for the future.”

Eric Church Is Wallen’s “Musical Hero”

In an interview with ET Canada, Morgan Wallen recalled the first time he ever saw Eric Church play live at Knoxville’s Thompson Boling Arena circa 2014.

“I was 21 years old, and I was just blown away [and] I already was a huge fan, you know, just because of his style of writing and his style of music,” the “Love Somebody” crooner said. “I just fell in love with everything that he did. Once I saw him in concert, that kind of ignited a real fire in me that maybe I could be like that one day.”
