Watch Chris Stapleton Deliver a Spellbinding Set at Austin City Limits Festival

Like most years, the 2024 Austin City Limits festival had a stacked and eclectic lineup. Artists representing country, blues, rock, Americana, hip-hop, and pop, performed during the two-weekend event at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. Chris Stapleton served as the headlining act for both Fridays (October 4 and 11).

Stapleton capped off both Friday nights of ACL Fest with a 90-minute set packed with some of his best work. He took fans on a journey through his albums—Traveller, Starting Over, Higher, and From a Room: Volume 1 and 2. Unlike most artists who mix a few covers into every set, Stapleton only played one. He performed a snippet of the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic “Freebird” before going directly into “The Devil Names Music.” He also played two covers that he included on previous albums—Guy Clark’s “Worry B Gone” from Starting Over and Kevin Welch’s “Millionaire” from From a Room: Volume 2. Then, he closed the set with his rendition of the David Allen Coe classic “Tennessee Whiskey.” Watch the full set from October 4 below.

Stapleton on How He Feels Before Getting Onstage

The video above proves that Chris Stapleton and his band put on a stellar show. In a 2017 interview with Bobby Bones, he revealed what goes through his mind in the moments before the lights come up and he takes the stage.

“I hope my fly’s up, those kinds of things,” he said jokingly when Bones asked what he thinks about in the final moments before his set begins. “Mainly just that I can get through the show and play the best show that is available out of me in that moment. That’s what’s going through my mind,” he said, more seriously.

“But also, right before the lights come up, there’s this brief moment of, it’s almost quiet. Then, the lights come on and it gets louder. I don’t know. It’s like for a minute you get to flip over and be in some other reality,” he said.
