George Strait Broke a Record with the Jamey Johnson-Penned Hit

It is fitting that George Strait and Jamey Johnson led the live rendition of “Give It Away.” Johnson co-penned it with Bill Anderson and Buddy Cannon. Strait made it a No. 1 hit.

King George released “Give It Away” in 2006 as the lead single from his album It Just Comes Natural. It went to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, giving Strait his 41st No. 1. More than that, it broke the record for most No. 1 singles on the Hot Country Songs chart, previously held by legendary country singer Conway Twitty. It also won ACM Awards for Single of the Year and Song of the Year in 2007. I also won Song of the Year at the CMA Awards and earned a Grammy Nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.

Bill Anderson wrote about the song in his book Whisperin’ Bill Anderson: An Unprecedented Life in Country Music. Johnson came up with the concept for the song inspired by his divorce.
