Sturgill Simpson is bringing some epic covers to his Why Not Tour. After closing out his opening show with an incredible version of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” Simpson delivered again the following night when he showed off his version of the Doors‘ “L.A. Woman.”

Simpson got the crowd at the Santa Barbara Bowl fired up as he added a country twang to the hit rock song on Sept. 15. Simpson rocked out as he belted out the track, playing guitar and having a blast on stage.
Simpson is on his Why Not Tour in support of his latest album, Passage du Desir, which was released back in July. He’s set to play cities throughout North America, before wrapping up the shows Nov. 24 in Boston.
The History Behind “L.A. Woman”
Released in 1971, “L.A. Woman” was the title track of The Doors’ final album with Jim Morrison. Guitarist Robby Krieger previously reflected on the song during an interview with L.A. Weekly, Ultimate Classic Rock reported.
“The L.A. woman was the city itself,” he said of the “magical” and “quintessential” Doors song. “When he’s talking about driving on the freeway, I always think about the intersection of the 405 and the 10. It was actually designed by a woman and it kind of opens up like a pair of legs.”
The guitarist also told Vulture that he considered “L.A. Woman” to be his favorite Doors song.
“We just started jamming and the song came together,” he said of writing and recording the track. “With most of our songs, either Jim would write it or I would write it, or Jim and I would write it together. But this time it was more of a jam… Somehow that song just came together.”
Nearly two decades after its release, “L.A. Woman” became a hit for Billy Idol, who covered the track on his album, Charmed Life.
