Willie Nelson’s Son Covers His Dad’s Song in the Same Room Where It Was Recorded—and the Similarities Are Startling

Willie Nelson has been a household name longer than many country music artists have been alive. His career has spanned seven decades and 25 No. 1 singles. Additionally, the Red-Headed Stranger also has eight children, many of whom have followed in his musical footsteps. However, Lukas Nelson, his 35-year-old son, seems to have claimed the title of his father’s heir apparent. The singer-songwriter has filled in for the “On the Road Again” singer multiple times, always with astounding results. Watch him perform this Willie Nelson classic on hallowed ground.

Lukas Nelson Stands Where His Father Once Stood

Willie Nelson made his country music debut all the way back in September 1962, when he released …And Then I Wrote through Liberty Records. The song “Funny How Time Slips Away” appears at No. 4 on the tracklist.

Although Nelson wrote “Funny How Time Slips Away,” he was not the first artist to find success with it. Having little luck finding a label after moving to Nashville in 1960, the “Always On My Mind” hitmaker sold his original songs to other artists. Country singer Billy Walker released his version of “Funny How Time Slips Away” in June 1961. Walker’s rendition peaked at No. 23 on Billboard’s Hot C&W Sides chart (now the Hot Country Songs chart.)

Back in 2018, Lukas Nelson performed “Funny How Time Slips Away” inside Nashville’s Historic RCA Studio B during an exclusive event for 650 AM WSM Radio. Before he launched into his own rendition, Lukas revealed exactly what was so significant about performing this specific song in that specific venue.

“This is a song that was recorded by my dad, I guess in this room,” he said. “So I think I should do it here.”

“Sounds Just Like Dad”

Watch the video below with your eyes closed to see if you can tell the difference between Lukas Nelson and his father.

Many online listeners had difficulty differentiating between the two as well. “Sounds just like dad,” one TikTok user commented.

On YouTube, another remarked, “It’s rare when a son has the same singing voice as his father. Lucas [sic] is one of those rare individuals who sounds exactly like his father. It’s great to know that we’ll have that voice for many years to come.”
