The movie, which marked the directorial debut of Oscar-winning filmmaker Cameron Crowe, captured Petty and his band in 1982 and ’83 as they finished recording, promoted, and toured in support of their 1982 studio album Long After Dark.
The original version of Heartbreakers Beach Party aired on television only once, on MTV in February 1983. In 2024, long-lost 16-millimter reels of the documentary were found, and the film was restored and remastered. The updated movie includes 19 minutes of previously unseen archival bonus footage, plus new commentary from Crowe.
The documentary includes appearances by Petty and all of the then-current members of The Heartbreakers—guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, drummer Stan Lynch, and bassist Howie Epstein. The film also features Stevie Nicks and Crowe.
The restored version Heartbreakers Beach Party initially was screened in select theaters in October 2024. The screenings coincided with the release of a deluxe reissue of Long After Dark.
Heartbreakers Beach Party also will begin streaming in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, France, Italy, and Germany on Paramount+ on March 12.
Crowe’s Comments About the Documentary
Crowe issued a statement about the documentary.
“Heartbreakers Beach Party occupies a special place in my heart,” he said. “Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers leaned into the making of the film with a kind of hilarious music-filled honesty that still feels fresh forty years later. It was also my first experience as a director.”
Crowe added, “I’m especially happy to add a postscript with the never-seen outtake footage I always treasured. The fact that the original film was yanked from MTV after only one airing shows that it was, and still is, an outlandish feast for fans in the best ways. Turn it up!!”
About the New Heartbreakers Beach Party Trailer
You can check out a new trailer for Heartbreakers Beach Party now at the Paramount Plus YouTube channel. The promo begins with footage of Petty discussing his attitude about being a rock star.
“I hate any artist that says, ‘Well, there’s me and there’s the character,’” he says. “What a load of s—. I can’t pretend to be T.P. and then come home and not be.”
The trailer also features candid conversations with Petty and the band while they were shooting the music video for the Long After Dark single “You Got Lucky.” In addition, it includes footage of Petty and company performing a few songs live, and goofing around while on tour.
Another segment, shot recently, shows Tom’s daughter Adria talking with Crowe. “I love that this film’s gonna see the light of day, ’cause it was a really magical time,” she comments.
Near the end of the clip, we see Petty talking about developing his passion for playing music. “Once the music got into my body, I mean, I never could think of doing anything else,” he says.
