American Idol‘s Head-to-Head round is off to an epic start. In a sneak peek of the next round of the competition, which will air on the April 7 episode of Idol, Thunderstorm Artis and Drew Ryn are there to impress. The pair opted to perform Lord Huron’s 2015 song “The Night We Met,” which features Phoebe Bridgers.

Ahead of their performance in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, the duo got a chance to rehearse with Jelly Roll, this season’s artist-in-residence.
“I was hearing so much emotion,” Jelly told the pair, before advising them, “Don’t close your eyes. If you can show me what I’m hearing, whoa.”
He also suggested that, during the performance, the pair either work to locate the camera or each other.
“You’re giving everybody a chance to see your soul,” he said.
Thunderstorm Artis and Drew Ryn Impress the Judges
The duo took Jelly’s advice to heart. When it came time for their performance, Artis and Ryn’s microphones were facing each other. The pair proceeded to sing the song directly to their duet partner.
Jelly was clearly proud as he watched on from backstage. He placed his hands over his mouth and smiled at what he saw.
Viewers will have to wait to see what the judges have to say about the performance. However, it seems like only good things are forthcoming. All three judges were on their feet when Artis and Ryn’s finished their song.
American Idol‘s Top 24
Artis and Ryn are two of the 42 singers who are competing for one of 20 remaining spots in Idol‘s Top 24. The first four spots were already awarded on the show’s April 6 episode to four contestants who impressed with their Showstoppers performance.
Mattie Pruitt, Canaan James Hill, Gabby Simone, and Zaylie Windsor were the lucky four selected, meaning they got to bypass the Head-to-Head portion of the competition.
The rest of the artists are left vying for spots amid a talented field of performers that’ll be cut by more than half.
American Idol airs Sundays and Mondays at 8/7 on ABC.
