Little River Band’s Roger McLachlan Dead at 71 After Secret Health Battle

While performing with several bands throughout his career in music, many remembered Roger McLachlan for his time as the bassist for the Little River Band. Having spent several decades in the music industry, the musician appeared on the first two albums from Little River Band and even toured with them. Eventually leaving the group, he returned once again until parting ways due to the rigorous touring schedule. Continuing to share his gifts with the world, sadly, McLachlan recently passed away at 71 years old.

The passing of McLachlan came as a shock to many as the musician secretly battled pancreatic cancer. Not wanting fans to learn about his diagnosis, the frontman for Late for Breakfast, Michael Oliphant, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook. Posting a few pictures of his friend on stage, he wrote, “It is with enormous sadness I report that Roger McLachlan passed away today from complications due to pancreatic cancer. He leaves behind his adoring wife Desley and a delightful loving family who were all with him through the end.” 

Explaining McLachlan’s decision to keep his health problems a secret, Oliphant continued, “Roger didn’t wish his struggle to be widely known and so chose to keep it just between family and a handful of friends. Roger was a wonderful friend, collaborator, musical powerhouse, absolute monster bass player and all round naughty boy…Life will never be the same. RIP dear mate. Gutted.”

Roger McLachlan Recalls Auditioning For Little River Band

Still processing the news of McLachlan’s passing, fans filled the comment section with love for the former musician. “Sad and can’t believe it . Every-time we touched base , he always looked the pillar of health and energised . Consummate musician and covered every base . Will miss your presence in our lives Roger.” Another person added, “So sad, Im in shock, You were a lovely man and a Fabulous musician Roger, Sincere Condolences to Desley and all your Wonderful family and friends. RIP”

While always remembered for his contribution to the Little River Band, McLachlan once recalled how he auditioned for the group by happenstance. When learning about the group needing a bass player from an agent, the bassist jumped at the chance. He told Riveting Riffs magazine, “I arrived for auditions and [early vocalist and songwriter] Graeham Goble said we’ve got this song called ‘It’s a Long Way There,’ we will play it and why don’t you just come in and we will see if something gels.” Following the direction, McLachlan was shocked at how well the group played. And finding a groove, the musician insisted, “The rest is history.” 

With McLachlan never losing his love for music, the musician was sure to leave his mark in the history of rock music.
