When asked about her favorite song to play live, Underwood revealed that it’s “Before He Cheats” from her 2005 studio debut Some Hearts. She started by saying, “I love to do covers,” but that “people really get into ‘Before He Cheats’ and sing it super loud and sassy,” adding her own sassy finger snap.
Underwood was then asked about the song she’s most proud of, and it’s also the song she knew she made it big with. For Underwood, that song is “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” As she explained, “I feel like that set up an entire career of being able to sing songs about faith … I didn’t even realize how important it was at the time,” adding, “But I’ve since gotten to make a gospel album, and sing songs like that. I feel like that’s what started it all.”
She also knew she made it big with “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” Underwood spoke about how it was No. 1 for a long time, and resonated with so many people. “I felt like I arrived,” she said with a laugh.
Carrie Underwood On What Kind of American Idol Judge She’ll Be
During that same appearance, Carrie Underwood revealed what kind of judge she’s going to be during her time on American Idol. She recently sealed the deal to take Katy Perry’s place, ending a long and arduous search for the next judge. However, for the 2004 winner, it feels like coming home.
Still, she now has to decide on her judging style. Something particular about her will most likely choose for her. As she revealed, “I can’t lie.”
Speaking with GMA on August 2, she continued, “I just can’t. You can tell. I feel like I’ll be very honest, but hopefully I can be very constructive and encouraging.”
It sounds like Carrie Underwood will try and find balance between judging styles like Simon Cowell’s, who was almost impossible to please, and styles like Lionel Richie’s, who tries to find the positive in every performance. Fans have been disappointed with the overwhelmingly positive comments from the current judges, feeling like there’s not enough criticism to help the contestants evolve. Those fans will have to wait and see how Underwood goes about giving constructive criticism this season.
