Heart’s Ann Wilson Closes Out Tammy Wynette Tribute Show With Epic “Stand By Your Man” Cover at the Ryman

Ann Wilson rendition of “Stand By Your Man” is not to be missed. The Heart singer took the stage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on March 30 during a tribute concert for the late great Tammy Wynette.

“It’s a real honor to be among you tonight and sing the songs of this great lady,” Wilson told the crowd. “… It’s an honor to be allowed to sing this one, too, because it’s probably the most powerful song worldwide that any woman can sing.”

With that, Wilson closed out the show in epic fashion, performing arguably Wynette’s best-known track to cheers from the crowd. The performance was so well received, in fact, that Wilson received a standing ovation for her efforts.

Wilson is not the first person one would think of to participate in a Wynette tribute concert. For Wynette’s daughter, Georgette Jones, that’s exactly why the Heart singer’s performance meant so much.

“There were people on there that really surprised me that they loved a new mom’s music like Ann Wilson,” Jones told American Songwriter ahead of the concert. “My sisters, they have always been huge Heart fans. Ann Wilson is just so incredibly talented.”

“You don’t think of Ann Wilson when you think of country music,” she added. “It’s pretty amazing that someone like her would have been influenced by and loved mom’s music as well.”

Tammy Wynette’s Impressive Reach

Overall, Wilson’s addition to the lineup showed the far-reaching nature of Wynette’s music.

“Mom, I think, never really knew or understood what a big influence she was on, not just country music, but in people from all genres of music, of all ages, even still today,” Jones said.

That was further proven by young stars like Carter Faith and Brittney Spencer, both of whom eagerly agreed to perform during the show.

For her part, Faith, whom Jones praised as having a “beautiful, angelic voice,” took the stage to perform “Another Lonely Song.” Before she began singing, she told the crowd that she prays to God and Wynette before each and every performance.

Spencer, meanwhile, delivered an impressive rendition of “My Man Understands.”

“She has so many influences in her music. You can tell she’s got some country, some R&B, some folk, all different kinds of influences in her music,” Jones said of Spencer. “I just remember sitting there thinking, ‘Wow’… She’s got energy, she has this beautiful smile, and she just was very friendly meeting her and talking to her. I enjoyed getting to know her. I think she’s gonna blow people away.”

Stars including Wynonna Judd, The War and Treaty, and Gretchen Wilson also performed during the show.

“One thing that really thrills us is seeing her effect on other people. Her music, her life, her legacy, the memories of her,” Jones said of her mom. “… It’s really emotional for us on a really deep, personal level, because Mom meant so much to us.”

“I know for her, music was her absolute passion,” she added. “If she were alive and here today, I think it would just really be such an amazing thing for her to see, for her to witness all of these different people taking time out of their busy schedules to be here just for her. It’s an incredible thing.”
