Jane’s Addiction Releases Surprise New Single Following Fight, Hiatus Announcement

Jane’s Addiction apparently can’t decide how they feel about each other—following a surprising onstage scuffle between Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro in which Farrell punched Navarro in the face, the band announced they would take a break from touring. They framed the hiatus as a chance to “take some time away as a group” following the incident.

Now, however, the band has quietly released a new single titled “True Love.” The song had its live debut in London earlier in the year but remained unreleased. This is their second single following “Imminent Redemption,” their first new music with the original lineup in 34 years. The band embarked on a run if U.K. shows following the release, with U.S. shows added later.

This is an interesting time for Jane’s Addiction to release a song called “True Love,” but maybe it’s also just what they need right now; possibly a unique way to do some damage control.

Farrell apologized to Navarro and fans in a public statement after Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins, and bassist Eric Avery announced that the band would be taking a break. They wrote in a joint statement that they’ve “come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current U.S. tour” citing a “continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell.”

Jane’s Addiction Has Gone On Touring Hiatus, But Still Releasing New Music

Perry Farrell made his own public apology on Instagram stories, per a report from Kerrang. “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show,” Farrell wrote recently. “Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

The song “True Love” appears on Spotify and other streaming platforms but the band has not done any promotion for it. This lends itself to speculation that this is yet another apology from the band to fans and each other. It’s ethereal and sweeping, with Perry Farrell singing about falling love for the first time.

While Jane’s Addiction has since shared that they’re working on a new album, no other information has been provided. The new single makes it clear there’s music in the works, but it’s unclear if there’s any more. For now, fans are hoping Jane’s Addiction can heal the emotional wounds caused by the Boston show with this time apart, coming back stronger and more determined.
