Luke Combs Grants Young Fan’s Wish to Sing “Fast Car” with Him

Luke Combs made one fan’s dream come true. At his sold-out show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Saturday (July 22), Combs invited a young fan named Cooper to perform onstage with him. Cooper is part of the Make-A-Wish program and his dream was to meet Combs, a fact he proudly shared on the blue T-shirt he wore on stage that read “Cooper’s wish to meet Luke Combs.”

Not only did Cooper get to meet the superstar, he also got to perform Combs’ latest chart-topping hit, a cover of Tracy Chapman‘s “Fast Car,” with him. Wrapping his arm around the eight-year-old, Combs introduced the performance. “These beautiful people who are so happy that you’re cancer-free,” Combs said before asking him for a high-five. The two then launched into the chorus of “Fast Car,” with Combs letting Cooper take the lead as the crowd sang loudly along with him in support.

A native of Georgia, Cooper was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of three, according to CBS News Boston. “When I was walking up, everyone was shouting my name. It felt great,” Cooper told the outlet, adding that he had “gone through a lot of stuff, a lot of surgeries.”

“Cooper’s wish was to meet Luke Combs. He had no idea that he was going to go on stage,” CEO of Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island Sean Holleran explained. “His secret wish, within his wish, was to sing ‘Fast Car’ with him. Luke Combs and his team made a lifetime memory for him.”

Combs’ cover of Chapman’s “Fast Car” recently became his 16th consecutive No. 1 single. It was originally a hit for Chapman when she released it in 1988 and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, in addition to scoring three Grammy nominations. Combs’ version makes Chapman the first Black woman to have a No. 1 country song as a solo songwriter.
