Sierra Ferrell Brings Out Surprise Guest for Shania Twain Cover at AT&T Stadium

From busking in New Orleans to winning Grammys, Sierra Ferrell’s ascent has been marvelous to witness. The West Virginia-born singer-songwriter borrows from bluegrass, jazz and calypso to create a sound that is uniquely her own. Ferrell’s artistry caught the eye of Post Malone and Jelly Roll, who invited her along on this year’s Big ASS Stadium Tour. During a recent stop in Arlington, Texas, the “American Dreaming” singer, 36, brought out a surprise guest of her own to cover a beloved ’90s country classic.

Those in the audience at AT&T Stadium for Friday’s (May 9) stop along the Big ASS Tour got quite the shock when, as one attendee put it, Joe Jonas “just casually” walked onstage. The Jonas Brother member joined Sierra Ferrell for a sweet cover of Shania Twain’s 1997 hit “You’re Still The One.”

Later, the fan posted footage of the performance on TikTok, writing, “I was too stunned to speak literally!” Others compared Jonas’ cowboy getup to a young Brad Paisley.

Inspired by criticism of her relationship with then-husband and producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, “You’re Still The One” is the first pop radio single from Twain’s 1997 studio album Come On Over. Peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, the song earned her two Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

How the Meaning of “You’re Still the One” Has Changed Over the Years

About a month before Sierra Ferrell and Joe Jonas covered “You’re Still the One,” Shania Twain spoke to the podcast Song Exploder regarding how the crossover hit’s meaning has shifted over nearly three decades.

Frustrated with public scrutiny surrounding her relationship with Lange, as well as questions about her artistic authenticity, Twain wrote “You’re Still the One” in response. The song meant to assure her, Lange, and listeners that they had, in fact, “made it.”

After the couple separated in 2008, Twain recalled worrying that performing the song would invite pity from her fans. However, she “soon realized that it wasn’t about me. People had adopted the song as their song.”
