While performing with the Police, Sting also explored a solo career that led to hit albums like Mercury Falling and If on a Winter’s Night. Thrilled over his career in the music industry, the hitmaker recently opened up about the legacy of the iconic song “Every Breath You Take” and the impact Sean “Diddy” Combs had on it when he sampled the hit.

Back in the 1990s, Combs appeared to be at the forefront of music as he released songs like “I’ll Be Missing You” with Faith Evans. During the song, fans of Sting heard the rapper sampling “Every Breath You Take.” Although not a big deal at the time, Combs now faces a plethora of allegations including rape, physical abuse, and even sex trafficking. With the singer’s career spiraling out of control as he remains in custody, Sting discussed his famous song and Combs.
When asked if Combs might have an impact on the song’s legacy, Sting said, “No. I mean, I don’t know what went on [with Diddy]. But it doesn’t taint the song at all for me. It’s still my song.”
Sting Hits The Road As Sean “Diddy” Combs Heads To Trial
Currently touring with drummer Chris Maas and musician Dominic Miller, Sting appeared to love life on the road and explained how he apparently never left the Police. Speaking with the Times, he explained, “I never left the Police. I’m not sure what I did. I just made a record — as the others had done — and enjoyed it more than I did being in a band.” The singer continued, “And here I am again. My whole modus is surprise. I don’t want people to be entirely confident about what I’m going to do next. That’s the essence of music for me. And no one expected a trio at this point.”
As for Combs, he remained in custody after a judge denied several bail requests. The record producer is set to face trial on May 5, 2025, with the judge insisting, “The court has an affirmative constitutional duty to ensure that Combs receives a fair trial.”
