Beyoncé Serenaded by Diana Ross for Her Birthday on Renaissance World Tour Stage

How did you spend your Labor Day weekend? Beyoncé passed the time doing what she does best: performing her world-class Renaissance World Tour, in this case bringing it to the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. In doing so, she also celebrated her 42nd birthday.

And because she’s Beyoncé, she got a very warm birthday wish sung to her by none other than Motown icon Diana Ross.

Ross joined Bey onstage for a hug and to ask all 70,000 fans in the stadium — including Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner — to hold up their phone flashlights and join her in singing “Happy Birthday.” Naturally, everyone complied.

“Thank you so much. You are so amazing,” Beyoncé said to Ross as they embraced, per People. “This is the legendary Diana Ross! There would be no me without you and thank you so much for all of your sacrifice and your beauty and your grace. Thank you for opening doors for me. Thank you so much.”

“You sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me so I wanted to sing it to you,” Ross said in return. Indeed, Beyoncé did wish the legendary vocalist a happy birthday on her 75th all the way back in 2019 in Los Angeles, as initially reported by Entertainment Tonight.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour is currently making its way through North America and just wrapped three nights at SoFi. She’ll next travel up to Vancouver before venturing on to Seattle, Arlington, her hometown of Houston, and New Orleans. This leg of the tour will wrap on October 1 in Kansas City.

The Renaissance World Tour, which kicked off on May 10 at Friends Arena in Sweden, had yielded just shy of $300 million according to reports in August. Billboard‘s estimations put the final gross somewhere near $500 million — making this run Beyoncé’s highest-grossing tour ever.

Renaissance, the album, was released in July 2022 and became her seventh album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. It features the highly danceable hits “Break My Soul,” “Cuff It,” and “Virgo’s Groove.” It does not, however, feature Diana Ross singing “Happy Birthday.” You’ll have to be in the right place (SoFi Stadium) at the right time (Beyoncé’s birthday) to hear that.
