Courtney Love Talks New Music, Her Crush on Kendrick Lamar, and Beefing With “Rude” PJ Harvey

Courtney Love is working on a comeback, and she hasn’t changed much in recent years, apparently. As always, she has a few very direct things to say about her contemporaries… both positive and negative.

In a recent interview with The Standard, the 60-year-old rock star opened up about writing new music and collaborating with some of the greats of rock and roll. Or, rather, she dished on her desire to collaborate with a few particular musicians. Specifically, Courtney Love voiced her distaste over being ghosted by fellow musician PJ Harvey.

“I wanted just one of her great iconic Stones guitar riffs,” said Love of Harvey in the new interview. “We have a relationship, I’ve endorsed her over the decades, but she chose not to respond to me. So I wrote her about how f***ing rude that was. Her manager tried to smooth things over, but it’s not okay… She hasn’t played rock music in 100 years!”

Love went on to say that she enjoyed Harvey’s first five albums, but noted that she “ventured into art space” after those particular records.

Outside of the perceived beef with PJ Harvey, Love also discussed artists she’d love to work with and artists she has successfully collaborated with. Echo And The Bunnymen guitarist Will Sargent is one collaborator, as is Michael Stipe of R.E.M.

“[Michael] Stipe mentioned our collaboration to The New York Times, so I can say it’s gorgeous,” Love told The Standard. “I fell down weeping hearing his voice.”

For reference, Love and Stipe have been friends for decades.

As she talked about her upcoming record, the former Hole frontwoman said that she wasn’t really interested in having a ton of collaborators on the album. However, she was pretty forthright about musicians that she would love to work with. A few of those artists include Lana Del Rey, Stormzy, and Kendrick Lamar, the latter of which Love said she has a “mad crush” on.

“I’m pretty rock-oriented myself and unsure how those collaborations can happen without feeling awkward,” Love noted. “It depends on the producer.”

Love has not released many additional details about the upcoming album, and a release date has not been set yet.
