Listen: Kenny Chesney Returns with Life-Spanning Love Song “Take Her Home”

Country star Kenny Chesney has shared his first new single of 2023. Released today (November 10), “Take Her Home” follows the imagery-driven theming of previous hits like “There Goes My Life.”

The song continues the Tennessee native’s sonic shift away from breezy, beach-ready anthems to modern pop country’s slightly rock-infused production style. Backing vocals provided by HARDY further add to that genre-bending sound, although the track lyrically stays true to Chesney’s brand of traditional storytelling.

Although the story of a man finding a woman who sticks by him from his wild youth to fatherhood is familiar, it’s a tale that still deeply connects with the country star.

“When I heard ‘Take Her Home,’ I just laughed,” Chesney said in a statement. “It was everything life is made of in less than four minutes. It’s true, honest, and all the stuff that’s easy to forget. All those details and little moments? The deep-cut Cheap Trick, the black-and-pink suitcase in the back of the truck, a 7-pound, 5-ounce baby? That’s what makes these kinds of life changes what they are. And it’s funny: no matter what stage you’re in, you really are always scared. That’s how you know it’s gonna be worth it.”

After keeping a relatively low profile for most of 2023, Chesney has been gearing up for a busy new year. Earlier this week, the country hitmaker unveiled his 2024 Sun Goes Down Tour, which kicks off in April. The lengthy headlining trek will feature Zac Brown BandMegan Moroney, and Uncle Kracker as support on select dates.

On Wednesday night (November 8), he joined Mac McAnally on stage at the 2023 CMA Awards for a performance of Jimmy Buffett‘s “A Pirate Looks at Forty.” The moving rendition was just one part of the star-studded tribute to the singer/songwriter, who died in September following a private battle with skin cancer.

Although details of what’s next for Kenny Chesney are still scarce, “Take Her Home” may offer a first taste of what would be his twentieth studio album. The unconfirmed project would mark his first full-length release since Here and Now arrived in 2020.
