The album is described in a press release as, “Euphoric escapist pop inspired by French house music and Parisian soundscapes” that is, “Shimmering with magnetic, laissez-faire confidence.” Petras wrote many of the songs for Problematique during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. It was originally going to be released in 2022 but had to be pulled after several songs leaked online ahead of time. “It’s ok if u wanna listen to the leaks,” she told fans in since-deleted social media posts in August 2022. “I’m not getting to put out any music anyways I’m fucked. I’m devastated idk how all of this happened and I just wanna quit.”

The surprise album drop comes right after the conclusion of the hitmaker’s three-part video series, Symphonic Sessions, wherein she performed her signature tracks “Alone,” “Minute” and “Claws.” Days after performing at the Life is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas on September 24, Petras will kick off the Feed the Beast World Tour in Austin, Texas, on September 27. Over the course of two months, she’ll visit cities across North America before heading to Europe in 2024. The European leg begins on February 13 in Birmingham, England, and concludes on March 5 in Milan, Italy.

The Germany-born singer rose to international fame when she teamed up with Sam Smith on “Unholy” and made history as the first openly transgender solo artist to hit number one in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the second openly transgender artist to win a Grammy Award when “Unholy” won for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2023 ceremony.
